Steve Katz
Triathlete/Ultra Endurance
Stephen Katz is an attorney, living in northern New Jersey with his wife
Andrea, his 13 year old son and his 15 year old daughter. Stephen first
began doing triathlons in the mid 1980's as a way to hang out with a
girl he liked. He did not get the girl, but he did fall in love with
the sport. In the early to mid 1990's he took a hiatus from competing
to focus on his career and to start a family. In the late 1990's
Stephen became an avid cyclist (both road and mountain) and he
discovered trail running. Eventually he tried his hand adventure
racing, competing in sprint, 12 hour and 24 hour adventure races. He
also competed in 24 hour mountain bike races and ultra distance trail
run races, including the inaugural Ramapo Mountain Madness 50 kilometer
trail run, where he came in first place in his age group. In 2004,
Stephen began to gravitate back to triathlon. Stephen started working
with Coach Cummings in 2006 as a way to improve his training and
ultimately improve his results. Coach Cummings has added a structured a
focused periodized training plan utilizing power zones on the bike and
pacing and heart rate zones for the run. The structured plan has paid
off, as Stephen's results have improved dramatically, including an age
group podium finish at the Harriman Sprint Triathlon in June 2007 (3rd
place) and a second place finish in the Men's 40-44 age group in the
American Zofingen ultra distance duathlon, which is known as one of the
toughest duathlon's in the country. In 2008, Stephen has raced the St.
Anthony's Triathlon and he has completed 10 New York City Marathon
qualifier races, including the Brooklyn Half Marathon, where he
shattered his old personal record for a half marathon. During the
remainder of the 2008, Stephen's priority races are the Harriman Sprint
Triathlon, Tin Man Triathlon (Half Ironman), New York Triathlon (Olympic
Distance), Timberman Triathlon (Half Ironman), American Zofingen and the
New York City Marathon.
